Christmas Tree Rash in the Spring

By Whitney Lapolla, M.D.

Pityriasis rosea is a common rash that occurs in the Springtime. The first finding on the skin is typically a large, scaly pink patch, known as a "herald" or "mother" patch followed soon after by smaller oval pink patches on the trunk; the distribution of pink patches is similar to that of ornaments on a Christmas tree. Pityriasis rosea is most common in people ages 10 to 35 years but may occur at any age. Some people may report fever, sore throat, fatigue or headache before the first patch appears but most people experience only the rash.
