The Itch That Rashed
Atopic dermatitis, or eczema, is a common skin condition that may occur throughout a person's life. It is not always apparent what happens first, the rash or the itching. People with atopic dermatitis develop itchy red patches. With itching, the affected skin patches become more red, inflamed, swollen and eventually crack with weeping of the skin and development of crusts. The more people scratch, the worse the skin becomes, and itching increases.
In general, atopic dermatitis begins in childhood. 10-20% of children develop atopic dermatitis. 80% of patients with atopic dermatitis show symptoms before the age of 5 years. Only 1-3% of adults will develop atopic dermatitis. More...
