The Stages of Syphilis

Syphilis is a disease caused by the bacteria Treponema pallidum. For the most part, it is a sexually transmitted disease, but also may be passed from mother to child during pregnancy. Babies born with congenital syphilis are infected in the womb and may have abnormalities involving their bones, skin, and internal organs. In adults, the signs and symptoms of syphilis depend upon the stage of disease.
