It is important to
remember to take special care of your skin
during the dry winter months. Here are a few
tips to make sure your skin stays moisturized and
healthy.
1. Stay hydrated-drink
plenty of water every day.
2. Avoid long baths or
showers and use warm water.
3. Pat skin dry after
bathing, rubbing your skin dry can
strip away essential oils.
4. Apply moisturizers
while your skin is damp.
Picking the right
moisturizer can be difficult, especially for those
with combination skin. Our
dermatologists are available to help you
choose which products are best for
you. We may even be able to see
you the same day.
Center for Clinical
studies is currently conducting studies for
patients with moderate to severe psoriasis or
psoriatic arthritis.

The
Shingles Vaccine
by Rana
Mays, MD
Karan Sra,
MD
Herpes
zoster (commonly known as shingles) results from
reactivation of the varicella zoster virus
(chickenpox) in the nerves causing a painful rash.
The virus reactivation occurs many years after the
initial infection of chicken pox and is primarily
due to an age-related decline in immunity.
Individuals with a history of chickenpox have a
10-20% lifetime chance of developing shingles, and
those with a family history are at even more risk.
Complications of shingles include but are not
limited to significant pain, development of
chronic pain or post herpetic neuralgia (PHN),
bacterial superinfection, hypopigmentation, and
hyperpigmentation. In immunocompromised patients
such as the elderly, and patients with HIV,
malignancy, and/or organ transplants, shingles can
cause more serious disease and potentially death.
Zostavax® (Merck) is a live attenuated
vaccine (meaning virus is weakened and
non-infectious) that is approved by the United
States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for
prevention of shingles.
